Corey graduated from the University of Arizona in 2009 with an English degree and took a four-year detour through the banking industry, where he excelled as a licensed banker, business banker, and branch manager. After a bit of introspection, he changed careers in 2014 and immediately felt at home in the classroom. In the summer of 2017, he moved to San Diego from a high school in Arizona, where, out of over 60 teachers, he had been voted the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year by the student body. He joined the SOUL team in the summer of 2017 and is excited to continue having an impact with students in the San Diego area!
Corey is credentialed in both math and English and has experience teaching honors courses, remedial courses, and everything in between. He loves teaching reading and, concerning writing, has many specific tools and tricks that can help students to effectively put their thoughts onto the page. Additionally, he has tutored algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Corey emphasizes the psychological and philosophical aspects of literature; he finds fulfillment in helping kids discover who they are and what they believe. He also prides himself on being patient, kind, and understanding, and he does his best to break ideas down visually so that his students can really grasp important concepts.
